Mohawk Hudson Regional Invitational 2012

ALBANY CENTER GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS THREE UNIQUE LOCAL ARTISTS AT THE 25th ANNUAL MOHAWK HUDSON REGIONAL INVITATIONAL

From May 4–June 9, Albany Center Gallery presents the 2012 Mohawk Hudson Regional Invitational, featuring the work of Renee Iacone, Nancy Van Deren, and Lynn Schwarzer. Each year, ACG selects participants from past Mohawk-Hudson Regional exhibits in order to showcase their work in greater depth, and is proud to highlight these three unique and accomplished local artists in 2012.

Renee Iacone is a sculptor, painter, printmaker, and ceramist who has worked with a diversity of materials, including wood, clay, plaster, oil, and scrap metal. She lives in both New York City and Columbia County, and operating and living on Kinderhook Farm greatly influences her nature-inflected sculptures. She has collaborated with sculptor Trudy Solin since 1998, producing figural works out of plywood and carved industrial foam wrapped in plaster. Her heavily textured ceramic sculptures are evocative of figures and ancient weapons.

Nancy Van Deren, an abstract painter, also lives in Columbia County. She received a BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. She has taught as a visiting artist at Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Sarah Lawrence College, Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of California. Her paintings are inspired by landscapes and the Color Field movement and offer unique and playful takes on color, form, and composition.

Lynn Schwarzer lives in rural Madison County and is the director of Film and Media Studies at Colgate University, also teaching printmaking and drawing in the Department of Art and Art History. She specializes in printmaking, drawing, computer graphics, and media studies. She received her BFA from Kirkland College and her MFA from Syracuse University. Her large mural-like, monochromatic drawings bring to mind biology and evolution and are inspired by such issues as the politics of display and communication technology.

An opening reception will take place on May 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Albany Center Gallery, 39 Columbia Street, Albany, NY.
