discard avant garb 2009

A benefit for The Tom Nattell Peace Poetry Prize Fund, the Christopher Ryan Art Scholarship, Albany Center Gallery and Grand Street Community Arts.

Celebrating the 10th Year of Discard Avant Garb: A Recycled Fashion Show, organizers have raised over $20,000 for non-profit educational and arts organizations.  Conceived in 1999 by Roxanne Storms, Molly Suwara, Valerie P. Funk, and Helen Martin, the organizing committee has grown to include Caroline Isachsen, Jimmy Cassaro, Eileen Clynes, GG Roberts, and emcee Mary Panza.

Capital Region artists are invited to create a wearable costume made primarily of materials that would otherwise be considered trash.  Packing materials, newspaper, onion bags, bottle caps, cassette tape, plastic shopping bags, wire, socks, gloves, old toys and vinyl records are just some of the wide array of materials that have been worked into functional art clothing.  The works are then presented in a fashion show format.

This year’s event also features several performance art installations, music with MotherJudge and DJ Nate, raffles, silent auction, cash bar, and more.

All proceeds this year will benefit The Tom Nattell Peace Poetry Prize Fund, an Albany High School Scholarship so-named for the late Albany poet and activist; Grand Street Community Arts, dedicated to creating a connection between it’s unique space and the community through the arts; Albany Center Gallery, a non-profit art space dedicated to exhibiting skillful contemporary art of the Mohawk Hudson region; and the Christopher Ryan Art Scholarship, a scholarship awarded yearly to an Albany High School student pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Fine Arts and named for the late local artist.

To kick off Discard Avant Garb 2009, artists and models did a preview at LARKfest, September 19, 2009 on the Hometown Stage.  DAG will also be at the Lark Street BID office as a part of First Friday in Albany, NY on October 2, 2009.  Advance tickets will be available at First Friday – standing room only tickets are just $20 – or they can be purchased at Tess’ Lark Tavern, Ultra Violet Cafe, or Albany Center Gallery.  A high point of the fall season in the Capital Region, the Discard Avant Garb Recycled Fashion Show is a perennial sell-out.
