Thom O'Connor Then & Now (Small Prints)
The
Albany Center Gallery is today announcing the creation of a life work “Then
& Now” exhibit in honor of local artist, and former University
at Albany professor, Thom
O’Connor. The exhibit will be opened on Friday August 12th, 2011,
and will run through Saturday September 10th, 2011. Note that this date
is the second Friday of the month and will deviate from the usual First
Friday exhibition schedule. The date was chosen in an attempt to allow for
a greater ability for our audience to be available for the O’Connor
opening. The gallery is very excited to be showing the small prints of Thom’s
collection, and we are sure the night will kick off a fantastic exhibition.
We invite you and hope that you are able to come to this wonderful event.
Thom O’Connor’s work has been consistently praised and highly
valued for its construction and thoughtfulness throughout his career. O’Connor
is recognized internationally as a master of printmaking, and for his innovation
and skill with new techniques. In an Albany Times Union article, author
William Jaeger explains, “O’Connor’s prints survive because
they have unusual visual sensitivity, [and] show extraordinary craft. There
is an undercurrent of drama that suggests, without delineation, a very human
dimension to the works.”
Thom was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937. He studied at the University
of Michigan, received his B.A. from the University of Florida, and continued
his art studies to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, receiving his
M.F.A. Thom’s award recognition includes: multiple fellowships, the
C.A.P.S. grant, and the Fulbright scholarship among others. O’Connor’s
work can be viewed at many internationally recognized museums throughout
the United States. Thom’s work has been shown internationally and
continues to be held in international collections. He has exhibited in solo
shows in places such as – Denmark, Finland, Yugoslavia and Brazil.
His work has also been exhibited in countless international shows. Today,
Thom continues to work on his art, and is a resident of Voorheesville, New
York. Thom is a truly talented, experienced, and tireless local artist.
The Thom O’Connor “Then & Now” event will again be
held on August 12th, from 5 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will close on Saturday
