Assiduity
"Gallery Exhibits Artists who have Collectively Been Making
Art in Albany, NY for 400 Years”
This is the year to celebrate Albany! With the Quadricentennial/Hudson 400
making the city of Albany a lively artistic and festive place, we invite
you to come and celebrate at Albany Center Gallery. Albany’s motto,
Assiduity, creates the theme on which the show is based. The selected artists:
David Brickman, Scott Brodie, Chris DeMarco, Dorothy Englander, Chip Fasciana,
Allen Grindle, Connie Frisbee Houde, Naomi Lewis, Harold Lohner, Willie
Marlowe, Gay Malin, Gail Nadeau, Susan Schmader, Gary Shankman, George Simmons,
Susan Stuart and Marie Triller have shown great care and perseverance and
have grown up, lived and worked to improve our city. We hope you will join
us to celebrate the artworks at Albany Center Gallery for the upcoming exhibit
entitled, Assiduity. The exhibit will open on September 1, 2009 and runs
until October 10, 2009. The opening celebration will be held on Friday,
September 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in conjunction with 1st Friday.
Created by Simeon DeWitt, the Arms of the City of Albany are a tribute to
everything that the hardworking people of our city stand for. An engineer
on the staff of George Washington during the war of the Revolution and City
Surveyor, DeWitt gives homage to the history before and after the Revolution
in his design. The shield recognizes the value and importance of the main
industry, and the supporters of the shield represent the farmers of the
Dutch Colonial period who produced the original wealth of Albany. The crest
of the shield shows a pictorial, representing our underscore in the value
of shipping and commerce. Most importantly, our City Motto Assiduity, indicates
the dominant virtue of the citizens who show great care, perseverance and
conquer all.
Collectively, the artists represented in the exhibit will make up 400 years
of service to the City of Albany, NY.
Albany Center Gallery is located at 39 Columbia Street in downtown Albany,
across from Tricentennial Park. We would like to acknowledge Harold Lohner
whom shared this idea with the gallery’s exhibition committee - we
are grateful for his support. We would also like to thank Albany Center
Gallery’s past intern Elana Bernnard who modernized the City of Arms
logo for this event. Also, we would like to thank Anthony Opalka the official
historian to the City of Albany for his information on the history of the
Arms.
